Introducing the Florida Live Oak French Trade Knife #437
The latest addition to our Historical Knives Collection, this piece reimagines the small 18th-century French trade knife—blending historical form with modern durability. Greg has preserved its graceful lines and practical spirit while upgrading materials for reliable, everyday performance and heirloom longevity. Favored by both home cooks and historical enthusiasts, these knives tend to sell out quickly at our events.
Measuring 9 5/8″ overall with a 5 1/2″ drop-point blade, this knife excels at slicing vegetables, carving meats, and general kitchen prep. The convex grind, with no secondary bevel, creates a “sticky sharp” edge that bites cleanly and slices with ease. The blade is forged from 1095 high-carbon steel and finished with an antiqued patina that adds character while improving corrosion resistance over time.
The stabilized Florida Live Oak handle showcases beautiful native grain while offering far greater stability and reduced maintenance compared to untreated wood. As part of our Florida Woods Series, this knife highlights timber Greg hand-selects and harvests here in Florida.
An optional handcrafted pouch sheath is available, stitched with linen thread and dyed using Greg’s traditional methods—oak bark for a warm brown or vinegaroon for a deep black. Each sheath is finished with hot beeswax for added water resistance, staying true to historical techniques.
Care & Maintenance
As with all high-carbon steel blades, hand-wash promptly, dry thoroughly. Before storing, apply a light coat of food-safe oil or Wiseman Axe & Knife Wax. The antiqued patina will continue to deepen with use, enhancing protection and character. Store in a dry place. Visit our Knife Care page for full care instructions.
