Handcrafted by GreBec Knives, the Southern Magnolia French Trade Knife #410 is a versatile kitchen and utility knife inspired by 18th-century French trade knives—rugged, reliable tools once used throughout early American households, trading posts, and frontier camps.
Part of our Florida Wood Series, this knife features a handle made from stabilized Florida Southern Magnolia, sustainably sourced from a tree downed during Hurricane Milton, then air-dried and professionally stabilized. Magnolia was selected not only for its performance, but for its historical relevance: in period trade knives, light-colored woods such as boxwood were commonly used, and Southern Magnolia closely matches boxwood in color, density, and working characteristics while offering excellent durability for modern use.
The stabilized Magnolia handle displays subtle figured grain and warm tonal variation, making each knife truly one of a kind. Secured with mild steel pins, the handle offers impressive hardness, density, and natural rot resistance—well suited for daily kitchen use. Home cooks and market shoppers consistently gravitate to this knife, and it sells out quickly thanks to its heirloom quality, low-maintenance finish, and outstanding cutting performance.
Measuring 9 7/8″ overall with a 5 5/8″ drop-point blade, the Magnolia French Trade Knife excels at slicing vegetables, carving meats, and everyday food prep. The blade features a finely honed convex grind for excellent edge retention and smooth, effortless cutting. Forged from U.S.-made 1095 high carbon steel, the full-tang blade is finished with an antiqued patina that develops character over time while providing added corrosion resistance.
Optional Custom Leather Sheath for the Southern Magnolia French Trade Knife #410
Upgrade your knife with a handcrafted pouch-style leather sheath made from vegetable-tanned leather. Each sheath is hand-cut, hand-stitched with heavy linen thread, and dyed using either our house-brewed Black Vinegaroon or Oak Bark dye, then beeswax-sealed for added water resistance.
Care & Maintenance
As with all high carbon steel blades, hand wash promptly after use and dry thoroughly. Before storing, apply a light coat of food-safe oil or Wiseman Axe & Knife Wax. The antiqued patina will continue to deepen with use, enhancing both protection and character. Store in a dry place. Visit our Knife Care page for full care instructions.
