Step into the spirit of early America with the Pernambuco Trade Knife #349.  This knife is a handcrafted tribute to 18th-century French trade knives—crafted by Greg at GreBec Knives in Florida.  The 9½” knife features a 5½” drop point blade made from 1/8″ 1095 high carbon steel. With its antiqued finish and finely honed convex grind, it’s ready for real-world use.  Whether you’re in the woods, in the kitchen, or building out your collection of historically inspired blades this knife is for you. Knives like this were once imported to the New World, often serving as a family’s only knife.  They proved to be versatile, sturdy, and essential.

The handle is made from exotic Pernambuco, secured with mild steel pins and the overall weight is 5 oz. This historically accurate Trade Knife, made with modern 1095 steel, offers long-lasting beauty and strength, making it a great choice for those who appreciate history but value durability and ease of maintenance.

Optional Leather Sheath

You can select an option to receive a custom pouch sheath with a standard belt loop, handcrafted from veg-tanned leather. Choose from two traditional dye options:

  • Vinegaroon Black – A deep, iron-black finish made with vinegaroon Greg brews in-house using traditional methods.  Learn more about how we make vinegaroon leather in our How to Make Vinegaroon Dye for Leather.”

  • Oak Bark Brown – A warm, natural tone dyed with oak bark extract, also made in our shop following old-world dyeing practices.

Each handcrafted sheath is stitched with heavy linen thread (never polyester) and treated with hot beeswax for enhanced water resistance. While we use modern veg-tanned leather, the construction and finish reflect our ongoing work to recreate and share historic leather dyeing techniques—check out our Historic Leather Dyes series on the blog for more behind-the-scenes details.
