Introducing the Live Oak Trade Knife #361

The latest piece in our Historical Knives Collection at GreBec Knives, this knife re-imagines the 18th-century French Trade Knife, blending historical charm with modern durability. Rather than replicate the original exactly, Greg captures its essence while using advanced materials for reliable, everyday performance. The 1095 high carbon steel blade holds an edge far longer than its historical predecessors ever could. And the stabilized Live Oak handle will remain beautiful over the years.

At just 3.4 ounces, this half-tang knife feels light in hand yet strong in use. The handle—shaped from stabilized Florida Live Oak with mild steel pins—offers a simple, timeless grip that works as well in the kitchen as it would on a trading post frontier. Part of our Florida Woods Series, this knife celebrates the native timbers Greg hand-harvests here in Florida. With its full flat/convex grind and no secondary bevel, the blade delivers a “sticky sharp” edge that excels in fine slicing—whether you’re preparing food at home or demonstrating period skills at an event.

Choose the optional handcrafted pouch sheath, stitched from linen thread and dyed with Greg’s own traditional leather brews—oak bark for a warm brown or vinegaroon for a deep black finish. Each sheath is treated with hot beeswax for water resistance, echoing time-honored methods.

Why the Live Oak Trade Knife #361?

This knife bridges two worlds. It’s historically inspired and reenactment-ready, yet it has quickly become a customer favorite in the kitchen for its balance, sharpness, and utility. With an overall length of 10 inches, a 5½-inch blade, and a 1-inch width, it’s just as at home slicing vegetables as it is adding authenticity to your kit. Many of our market customers buy one for history—and end up using it every day.
