6 3/8" OAL Caping/EDC/Patch custom High Carbon Steel knife with Florida Magnolia handle! and there's 4 of them!

These gorgeous little knives are the very first knives I've made with with Florida Magnolia! A friend brought me 3 logs from a Magnolia tree that was felled during a storm some time during the summer of 2024. Each log was about 4 feet long and between 18 and 24 inches in diameter. I should be able to get quite a few knife handles from that!

Here is a photo of the first Magnolia handled Custom High Carbon Steel Knife. Two of the 4 have a Brushed finish, one has a Coffee Etched finish, and one has a Stonewashed finish. I added the different finishes to get a good idea of how this 'new to me' Florida wood will look as knife scales.

I was surprised at variances between the different knife handles, I mean they all came from one section of one log that was about 18 Inches long. All 4 pieces that were used were stabilized at the same time, using the exact same process and stabilizing resin. All 4 are a very light colored wood, but some have very distinctive grain patterns, some are almost a caramel color, while some are almost white (well off white anyway).

We (my darling Wife and I) are trying to get a video edited that shows the entire process from log to completed knives. When the video is complete it will get linked to this post. When I get around to it, I will also make a new Florida Woods blog about the Magnolia. Anyway, here are the individual Florida Magnolia handled Caping/EDC knives....

All of the Florida Magnolia wood that I will use will be stabilized (resin impregnated) this makes the knife scales fairly moisture resistant as well as making the color of the wood extremely stable. With a little care these handles will hold their color for generations.

I chose to stay with 1095 High Carbon steel because of it's durability and easy of sharpening. With use, 1095 will develop a patina that aides in protecting the blade from that dreaded red rust. The easiest way I have found to keep a High Carbon steel blade protected is to use an Axe & Knife Wax. The Axe Wax that I suggest using is from Wisemen Trading Co https://wisementrading.com/wood-working/axe-accessories/wisemen-trading-axe-wax/, You can order it from their website or you can pick it up from me at the Deland Artisan Market.

This freakin awesome little Florida Magnolia handled knife (pictures above) is a perfect EDC as well as a phenomenal Caping knife. Don't let the diminutive size (6 3/8" OAL) fool you, this knife will perform 99% of any task you really want to do. A full Flat Grind with a slight distal taper and it is razor sharp, making it a great slicer and cutter. This one has Silver Star mosaic pins (they're Aluminum) a Brushed finish, and Thumb Serrations that add a touch of control for the delicate work. The scales are book-end matched like all of my full tang knives. The scales are a very light color with distinctive figuring and grain pattern. The specs fare listed below.

The second Magnolia handled EDC/Caping knife (pictured above) is just as freakin' awesome as the first one. Number 2 has the same over-all-length of 6 3/8" and also has a Brushed blade finish. The difference is number 2 doesn't have the Thumb Serrations and it has Brass Pins in place of the Star Mosaic pins. The Florida Magnolia on knife #2 has a rich caramel color that is a bit darker than the other 3 knives. The variations in color from a single 18 inch chunk of wood is amazing. It's going to be tough to pick a favorite handle with Magnolia. Spec's for number 2 are listed below.

The third little Florida Magnolia Caping/EDC knife may be dimensionally the same as the first two but, it certainly stand out. The stonewashed blade and the mild steel pins make the appearance of this little knife simply gorgeous. The light color of the Florida Magnolia handle contrasts beautifully with the blade and give it a character of its own. The spec's for this happy little knife are listed below.

On this particular Florida Magnolia handled EDC/Caping knife (Pictured above) I decided to add an Acidized and Coffee Etched blade, Thumb Serrations, Silver Star Mosaic Pins, and a Lanyard Tube. The wood grain patterns on this handle are beautifully subtle and elegant, making this knife as pleasing to the eye as it is to use. This knife will ride on your hip all day, and with the easy to deploy pouch sheath, it will be ready to use in a heartbeat. The razor sharp edge will happily cut rope while hiking or camping as easily as it will cut your favorite steak. The spec's for this unique little knife are listed below.
